ICE2012
This week, I am given the golden opportunity to join the International Conference on Education 2012, ICE2012 that gathers some fine educationists around the world. Some of these invited speakers I have seen their names before via social networking, but I've never expected to see them this close and they have a very nice personality and presentation skills.
There are three types of speakers invited for these conference namely Keynote speakers (very influential and established person in education field), Featured speakers (not really sure how to describe this,maybe successful educators) and Spotlight speakers (locally established education officers). I will not go into details on Keynote and Featured speakers. I just want to write about the local Spotlight speakers.
The first Spotlight speaker is an established EO who had won Innovative teacher, represented Brunei regionally and internationally on certain conference and his works are recognized by MOE. Well...his presentation was about his ICT journey and how he used some tech tools in his teaching. I was quite curious hiw he did all those since what he did was quite similar to what I do, so during Q/A session, I asked him, "how do you deal with underpriviledged students? some of these students might not have computer, and even if they do, I believe some of them might not have internet access. Computer at school? Yes they are accessible, but mind you that the internet service in Brunei is not very good. Moreover, the computer lab is only accessible to computer students only." His reply? Personally, I am not quite satisfied with his answer. Well, I am not expecting him to give us the perfect solution anyway.
"Computers are accessible in the school nowadays, so why not use it? For me, I will arrange a time for these students to enter the computer lab, ask them to print the notes and so on. For hostellites, I will open the computer lab at night so that they can use it. For internet access that Youtube and Facebook being blocked, I cannot do anything about it. Why don't you deal with the ICT department at JSS?"
Ideal solution? Nah, I don't think so. As I've mentioned earlier, I was not expecting a perfect answer. I actually wanted to see how "good" this innovative teacher is, so from his reply alone, I am sure he had never encountered, let alone imagined, this problem/situation. For someone who has represented Brunei internationally, I really expected a mind opening answer. Innovative? Not anymore... Even during recess, some teachers approached me, voicing their opinion that his reply is not good enough. I was like, "oookkaayyy"
Moving on to other Spotlight speaker. One of them is my friend from the sixth form. His works are recognized by the ministry since he had lead the Brunei team in Korea to victory against other countries from around the world. I have to say, I really respect and admired his work. So, I was looking forward to his presentation.
His presentation was about Edmodo and digital transition in administration works. Very impressive works since he already convinced the administrators in his school to use it. However, (sorry my friend), he seemed to be very nervous and lost focus sometimes. Maybe the pressure is too much for him since this is an international convention (he was prior to this convention, invited numerously to present his works locally, the latest was the e-Hijrah talks). By the way, nice to see one of my friend on the stage though.
Overall, I really enjoyed the convention this time. Some mind provoking ideas was being shared and inspired me to do more with my teachings.
Some of these speakers did inspire me to re-visit and update my blog, specifically this cool Professor McVey. At first, he (purposely) made himself look clumsy, however right away after he started his presentation, his charisma (for me) did the talking. His interactions with the audiences and how he was able to make us pay attention to every single word he voiced is really amazing. I really enjoyed his presentation, and directly inspired me to do similar style of presentation in the future.
